Dil ka rishta is the story of an NRI girl, Monika (Sangeeta) who has always dreamt about marrying a handsome Indian army officer. As luck would have it, she meets her dream man, Rishi (Vikram Chatterjee), at a friend's wedding. In spite of the strong opposition from her family and friends back in US, she is determined to get married to him. The movie follows their love story which unfolds in India and US. It also shows how Monika's mother (Reema Lagoo) decides to come to India for the wedding of her daughter.Monika (Sangeeta) is an NRI who has grown up in the US with American parents. She had always wished of marrying an Indian army officer, whom she can proudly bring back home to her family in USA. Her wish is fulfilled when she meets Rishi (Vikram Chatterjee), who is on his way back home after completing his post graduation in USA. She was fascinated by him and soon they fell in love. Rishi used to call Monika every day but her father hates him as he thinks that Rishi has an ulterior motive behind loving his daughter. One night, her father calls Rishi to meet him in a hotel. There he tells Rishi that he cannot accept his daughter's love as he thinks Rishi is only interested in the Green card. Just then Monika comes there and starts slapping her father but later she feels sorry for him.Next morning, Monika's mother realizes that she is pregnant and she tells this to Rishi. She also tells him that if Rishi agrees to their plan then they will allow Monika to marry him, otherwise they will send her out of the house for ever. When Monika returns home after knowing about this plan, she decides to have an abortion but her mother stops her from doing so. After this incident, her parents decide to get Monika married to Rishi. Rishi also agrees to their plan. The next day they all go to a temple for the wedding. In the mean time, Monika's father calls Rishi and asks him about his plans if he gets a Green card. As it is too late, they go ahead with the wedding ceremony. After marriage, Monika asks her mother that now she can divorce Rishi and return back home but she is told not to do so as she has already disgraced her family by having an abortion before marriage and also for marrying a non-Christian man. She tells Monika that after this incident she cannot bring shame to her family again. One night, Monika's father comes to Rishi's house with a small gift for his daughter. He is welcomed by Monika's mother with flowers and then they sit down to have coffee. After that, they go to Monika's room where her father gives her the gift. She opens it and finds a key inside it. She asks about the key but her father tells her that he has no idea about it. Soon Monika gets out of the house at night to find out what this key is meant for. She goes around their home which is located at a hilltop and finds many rooms which are locked with this key.
